Tessitura refers to the range of an instrument, different voicings and timbres. Tessitura means texture, and is important to know when dealing with a lot of instruments that have similar ranges. To add texture to an arrangement, maybe just play piano in some parts, and guitar in others. The music is important, and band rehearsal time is short and valuable. There’s no time for dicking around. Charts need to be existent, clear and to the point. When writing chords, use all capital letters regardless of major or minor. Section out the song using rehearsal letters (A, B, A, C…). On the chart, include a centered title, BPM, composer/arranged by/date on the top right side. When using repeats on a chart, don’t use a repeat inside a repeat. In terms of making the arrangement of a tune more interesting, add soli’s, solo sections, chord inversions, or transpose certain parts. Comping is a term for accompaniment by another instrument during a vamp section or solo. Comping usually consists of a more sparse version of the main lick in the song. This week for rehearsal and preproduction we practiced 4 of the 5 songs we will have for the group. They are coming along nicely, and everyone seems have written near the same style of tune. We have also come up with a killer band name: (Control Z) I thought this one was really creative given the major that most of us are pursuing. Credits to Don for the band name!!
